The center section of the layout is meant to represent some distance running between the two towns. The "mainline" track is finished in this area, so scenery work has commenced. As shown in the photo below, the area now has 1-inch strips of cardboard installed. I use a hot-glue gun to attach the strips to each other and to the layout.

Next I covered this with sections of newspaper, which were glued to the cardboard web with a hot-glue gun also. I tried regular white glue, but it took too long to dry. The hot-glue approach goes much faster. One layer of newspaper was enough for my tastes.
