I placed the plywood subroadbed on the vertical spacers and attached them with a counter-sunk screw. This provides smooth, solid support for the track.
Before starting the trackwork, I wanted to have all the lower-level subroadbed in place. This means I needed to start work on the benchwork for the right-hand
side of the layout. As the next photo shows, I cut a bunch of 1/4"-plywood supports. These are 2.5 inches (6.35cm) tall. I glued some small blocks to their
sides so that they could sit up. For the gap between the cabinets and the bookcase I placed some boards facing the other direction. They have not yet been
glued. These boards will be the foundation of the benchwork for this side of the layout.
Next, I cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to the shape of this area on the right hand side. I placed it on the vertical boards and sketched out the three levels of
elevation that will be in this area. Back in the garage, I cut the three sections out of the sheet. The photo below shows the lowest-level section placed on
the vertical boards (it is not at the correct height). I then used that piece's position to determine where the supports of the mid-level section needed to
be. I glued those vertical spacers in place. They also serve as the edge markers for where the lowest-level plywood sheet will go. The lowest-level will be
a body of water. The mid-level section will be connected to the lower section of track coming from the center section of the layout. I need that to be
installed so that I can connect the two areas.
