Using a rasp plane, I made sure to level the spline subroadbed and blend it smoothly with the plywood sections. Not much had to be removed, mostly just some
oozed-out glue and some minor unevennesses with the plywood spacers.
The next step is to install the cork. I bought a roll of cork from Hobby Lobby. Here you can see the first piece of cork glued down to the turnout area on
the right-hand side of the center section of the layout. This is where the new part of the layout starts. I used yellow carpenters glue.
Then all I needed to do was to trim the cork to fit the subroadbed plywood. I will trim the cork later to fit the slope of the track when the ties have been
installed. Cork can be removed from unwanted areas fairly easily.
For the simple areas of track, I cut a piece of cork to the rough shape, placed glue on the plywood substrate, placed the cork, added a sheet of wax paper,
and clamped the area down using straight pieces of wood. The wax paper (not shown in the photo) is needed to keep the glue from oozing through the cork and
attaching itself to the pieces of wood on top (lesson learned the hard way).
For larger flat areas clamps don't really work very well, but a pile of books, strategically placed, do the trick.
