Photo Albums - Burton, Texas

These photos were taken in Burton, Texas in April 2003. Much to our amazement we found a Railway Express Agency building, two cabooses, and several railroad artifacts in remarkable condition.

This is the Railway Express Agency in Burton, Texas.

By the way, I have found another photo on the Web of this depot, taken in 1994 (rear view without the cabooses in place yet).

Baggage car at the REA building.

Behind the building we found a signal, a switch stand, and two cabooses. The building itself was not open, but looking through the windows, it appeared that the interior was in almost as good a condition as the exterior. Perhaps the building is still in the process of being restored.

One of the cabooses with several baggage cars in front of it.

This is a close-up photo of one of the trucks of the caboose shown above. The photo was purposefully slightly over-exposed so that all the details of the truck could be clearly visible.

We now move to the other caboose. It was open and in very good shape inside and out.

The interior of the caboose has a photo gallery of how the building and caboose were restored. To be able to shoot the entire frame in one photo I used the wide angle camera lens, hence the distortion of the frame.

This photo shows the cabin area. The caboose is very tight and small inside, so it was a bit of a challenge to get a good photo of the interior.

A wood burning stove could be found inside as well. By the way, there is a nice restroom in the caboose as well!

The last set of photos show a railroad crossing signal (if I am not mistaken), some unknown machine, and a cotton gin. The gin is right across the street from the REA building.

The map below shows a black arrowhead indicating from where these photos were taken.
