How It Works

As you make your way around the Internet, you will find lots of web sites with typos (misspelled words). As amusing as this might be, it also communicates a certain lack of professionalism by the owner of the web site. Misspelled words can also lead to lack of understanding or comprehension by the visitor to the site. In the most serious of cases this can even lead to legal issues.

FRSWebSpell™ seeks to remedy this situation. It identifies words not found in the dictionary. It is then up to you to determine whether an unrecognized word is spelled correctly and simply not found in the dictionary, or if the word is truly misspelled. You can ignore the word, add it to your custom dictionary, or correct it. FRSWebSpell offers suggestions for misspelled words, if available.

FRSWebSpell comes with a standard U.S. English dictionary that contains well over 91,000 words. The application will automatically download the latest U.S. English dictionary from the Fourth Ray Software server when a new version is available.

If FRSWebSpell identifies a word not found in the standard U.S. English dictionary and you decide that the word is spelled correctly, you can add it to a custom dictionary. This is a dictionary that you can update as you please. A full-featured and easy-to-use editor for the dictionary is built right into the application. When the word is added to your custom dictionary, FRSWebSpell will, from then on, recognize the word as valid.

Many people use Microsoft® Word® as their document editor. Word® has its own custom dictionaries. If you use MS Word to perform spell checking of your office documents, you will most likely have collected a list of words in MS Word's custom dictionary. FRSWebSpell recognizes MS Word's custom dictionaries. At your discretion, you can tell FRSWebSpell to use the MS Word custom dictionary. Any number of custom MS Word dictionaries are supported. And, yes, you can modify your MS Word custom dictionaries directly from within FRSWebSpell also!

FRSWebSpell now also supports the Mozilla Thunderbird custom dictionary, which you might have updated while composing e-mails, if you use that application.

You can select which dictionaries to use for each individual web site project. How flexible is that! Because of custom dictionaries, non-English dictionaries are indirectly supported as well.

FRSWebSpell can spell check any web site you maintain. The product is intended for webmasters, and so it assumes that you have a copy of your web site's HTML files on your computer or on a computer connected to your local network. FRSWebSpell does not spell check web sites directly on the Web. This is by design. You must have access to the files on your computer. You can set up as many web site projects as you need within FRSWebSpell. If you maintain more than one web site, you can quickly spell check them all. Both public Internet and private Intranet web sites can be spell checked.

Only words visible to a web page's visitor are spell checked. FRSWebSpell™ ignores words found in HTML comments, HTML tags, style blocks, etc.

FRSWebSpell starts spell checking immediately after you have set up your web site project. Any unrecognized words are shown in the main window. If you have previously set up the project, when FRSWebSpell starts, it will start spell checking. This means that you can set up FRSWebSpell to be scheduled by the Windows Operating System to run at a certain day and time, so that it is done by the time you are ready to look at the results.

You can correct typos directly from within FRSWebSpell. It makes temporary back-up copies of the affected files, so that you can be confident to reverse any changes you have made from within FRSWebSpell. If you prefer to make the change yourself, FRSWebSpell provides the means to quickly launch a selected HTML file into your default web page editor. You can also preview the file in your web browser.

If you leave FRSWebSpell up while you modify your web pages locally, it will automatically spell check the files as soon as they are saved to disk.

FRSWebSpell can analyze all the popular HTML-based file formats, such as htm, html, shtml, php, asp, jsp, etc.
